1. Corrected and reviewed grammar lessons 3 & 4.
2. Peer-reviewed Gladiator writing response online in SS.
3. Peer-reviewed writing response in class with post-it note feedback.
4. Discussed elements of strong response:
  • 1st sentence-Did you state the topic of paragraph?
  • 2nd sentence-Did you state your reason for banning gladiator battles?
  • 3rd sentence-Did you give at least (1) concrete example from the text to support your reason in 2nd sentence?
  • 4th sentence-Did you explain how your example(s) support your reason for the ban?
  • 5th sentence-Did you conclude the paragraph with closing statement?
  • Did you use correct punctuation, spelling, and mechanics?
  • Can some of your sentences include compound predicates (from today's grammar lesson?)
  • Could you use 1-2 new vocab words from the Gladiator text into your response?
HW-

  • Revise your writing response in your 365 Word account and make (3) changes from your 1st draft to your 2nd draft. PRINT OUT COPY AND BRING TO CLASS.

1. Reviewed Think questions as a class. Also discussed unit theme (The Powers that Be) and how Gladiator relates to that theme.
 
2. Reviewed lessons 1 & 2 in grammar packet-mini-lecture and then students worked on exercises #1-#10 for each lesson in groups at assigned tables. We then reviewed answers together.
 
3. Discussed writing prompt (located in SS in Close Read assignment)-what makes a strong paragraph? What should go into a paragraph? We are doing multiple drafts this week; today is a practice day to see what kids know about writing.
 
4. Complete writing prompt in SS and submit for review tomorrow.
 
HW-
1. Grammar lessons 3 & 4 (#1-10)-NOT 2nd period as we did not get to    this in class today!
2. Finish writing prompt in SS (in Close Read) if not done in class

1. Explained how to complete Level 1 and Level 2 annotations (please see home page for sample annotation Guide) on right side of website.
 
2. Shared out annotations in small group and large group.
 
3. Worked on Think Questions in small groups (students may be using notebook, SS book or computer for this portion since kids just received textbooks yesterday). Will accept any versions of annotations and Think Questions for this week.
 
HW--Finish Level 1 & 2 annotations and Think Questions (if not completed in class). Bring SS textbook to class tomorrow.

1. Discussed new unit "The Powers that Be" as a whole class.
2. Watched intro to SS text Gladiator.
3. Reviewed new vocab words in SS.
4. Reviewed Level 1 annotations (note a connection, state an opinion and make an illustration while reading). Ideally our annotations (notes) will be put into the margin of the SS workbook but not all of us had books today and had to use paper).
5. Read Gladiator in SS or listened to it with headphones.
 
HW-Finish Level 1 annotations (some classes started Level 2) and bring SS workbook to class
