PVIS ROV 2017-18
The PVIS ROV club starts in the fall and runs through the middle of May. We usually meet twice a week, Mondays after school from 2:00 to 4:00 and Wednesdays during lunch in room 612. It is common for the number of after-school meeting to increase in April and May as we build up to the competition. The competition is usually held the second Saturday in May at Long Beach City College.
The ROV Club is a great place to learn about tethered robotic systems. Club members will learn or practice skills such as soldering, Arduino programming, Autodesk Fusion design, 3D printing, laser cutting, and teamwork. The club usually fields two MATE ROV teams. The teams work on their own ROVs but share resources and expertise.
The number of students allowed on the pool deck during the competition is limited but each team has two attempts and students can alternate giving more students a chance to compete.
Students can participate in the club and not commit to being on a team. It is common for students to participate but not compete their first year.
Participation in the club can be flexible but a commitment to a team is critical. If you decide to join one of the ROV teams you are committing to attending meetings and performing your jobs.
Being on an ROV team is hard work but very rewarding.
Much of the equipment we use is provided by the Peninsula Education Foundation through our STEM department. Thank you to all our families that continue to support the Peninsula Education Foundation.
The ROV club is sponsored by the PVIS Booster Club. Booster club memberships are usually enough to offset the cost of PVIS programs but the ROV Club meets for six months and has considerable materials expenses. To offset these costs, the Booster Club is asking for ROV Club participants to make the following donations. Booster club premium members- $50. Booster club members-$100. Non-members- $200. These are not required fees.
