PVIS Principal's Update- Welcome Back to School!

Welcome Back Sea Kings! Principal's Update August 2023

Lots of important information for the start of the school year. Principal's Updates are sent bi-weekly throughout the school year, please make sure to find them in your Aeries associated email accounts.

PVIS Families,

Welcome back to school! We are excited to begin the 24-25 school year and have been hard at work preparing and planning for our students. A huge thank you to PTSA, Boosters, PVPUSD, & PVIS Staff for your hard work and dedication.

At PVIS we believe that middle school is the most influential time in a young person's life. Students at this age are coming out of childhood and exploring their own identities, finding their social circles, and how they fit into the world. During this time, emotions range from high to low and everything in between. We see our primary responsibility as supportive and creating a safe place. We believe it only takes one trusted adult connection to make all the difference for the social, emotional, and/or academic success of a middle schooler. This year we will continue to emphasize making connections with students; being a steady force until students are ready. "We Will Always Keep a Door Open."

Micah J. Farrell, Principal

CELL

Please join us in supporting our cell phone policy at PVIS. Our policy states that cell phones should be silenced and kept or live in the student locker.cell

We believe that cell phones are a distraction to the student learning environment in many ways, such as increasing cognitive load,  poor connectedness to school, and academic dishonesty.

Additionally, increased screen time can negatively impact a student's well-being. Social anxiety, lack of self-control, cyberbullying, and more are correlated to increased screen time. Let's work together for the betterment of our student's learning environment!

Microsoft Teams: Get Started the Right Way - Abacus CPAs

PVIS is a Teams School and each teacher has a dedicated "Teams Page"-their classroom hub. Through the teacher's Teams Page, students can access assignments, classwork, turn in homework, etc. (especially when absent).

We will spend the first few weeks, especially with our new Sea Kings training them to access and use the program. Please note that only students can access the teacher's Teams Pages (with their PVPUSD login credentials). Also, please note that it will be OK :) Students are tech-savvy and will understand the usability very quickly :)

We are here to help if you have Teams or any other tech questions, you can fill out a 'tech ticket' here.

PVIS at its BEST!

PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a research-based, school-wide systems approach to improving school climate and creating safer and more effective schools. ™ PBIS is designed to teach and reinforce positive behaviors among students. Palos Verdes Intermediate School is in its fourth year of implementing PBIS.

We continue to be excited about the efforts being made to make PVIS a safe, positive, and respectful community that values integrity, academic success, and social and emotional well-being.

At the start of the school year, students participate in school-wide lessons focusing on being their BEST. PVIS teachers use these lessons to introduce our school-wide behavior matrix and BEST expectations:

Be Safe

Encourage Kindness

Show Integrity

Take Action

Parents, we couldn't do this work without your active participation and support.

THANK YOU for helping us encourage our students to be their BEST every day!
