Sea Kings Families,
Welcome back to PVIS and welcome to our newest Sea Kings. Middle school does not get the credit it deserves. Elementary school gets to be the first impression, the lasting memories of "firsts"; a time when students begin to establish their identity as a student. High school of course is the biggest stage, when academic course work, athletics, and extracurriculars can lead to college and beyond.
So where does middle school fit in? In my opinion, it is the most important stage in a student's journey. Academically speaking students learn skills that translate to high school and college. Socially, they develop as a young adult through the circles they interact with. They learn about social hierarchies, cues, different opinions, and ultimately more about themselves. This is why middle school is said to be the most challenging, as the greatest growth and most work comes during this time.
As educators, we work to prepare students academically, including their executive functioning to ensure they are ready for high school. We believe the balance between academic rigor and recreation is imperative-work hard, play hard. As parents, the best thing we can do for our middle schooler is to be supportive, maintain high expectations, encourage independence, listen without always acting, and hug often:)
At PVIS this year and every year, we will work to create a safe learning environment that students and staff look forward to daily. We are against all forms of disrespect, discrimination, harassment, and anything else that negatively affects the overall well-being of our students. We will continue to strive for academic excellence, focusing on bringing all students to grade level or above through targeted instruction driven by student data and interventions when needed.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a research-based, school-wide systems approach to improving school climate and creating safer and more effective schools. ™ PBIS is designed to teach and reinforce positive behaviors among students. Palos Verdes Intermediate School is in its fourth year of implementing PBIS.
We continue to be excited about the efforts being made to make PVIS a safe, positive, and respectful community that values integrity, academic success, and social and emotional well-being.
At the start of the school year, students participate in school-wide lessons that focus on being their BEST. PVIS teachers use these lessons to introduce our school-wide behavior matrix and BEST expectations:
Be Safe
Encourage Kindness
Show Integrity
Take Action
Parents, we couldn't do this work without your active participation and support.
THANK YOU for helping us encourage our students to be their BEST every day!

Please Review PVPUSD BYOD Policy
Please join us in supporting our cell phone policy at PVIS. Our policy states that cell phones should be silenced and kept or live in the student locker.
We believe that cell phones are a distraction to the student learning environment in many ways, such as increasing cognitive load, poor connectedness to school, and academic dishonesty.
Additionally, a student's well-being can be negatively impacted by increased screen time. Social anxiety, lack of self-control, cyberbullying, and more are correlated to increased screen time. Let's work together for the betterment of our student's learning environment!
