Be kind to yourself
People often focus on how important it is to be kind to others. What does it mean to be kind? Thinking of other people’s feelings. Initiating small gestures that lift other people up. How often do you remember to give yourself the same kindness you frequently give to others?
- Accept that you are human. Humans are not perfect, they make mistakes. If and when you make a mistake - acknowledge it, make amends if necessary, and gently forgive yourself.
- Remind yourself that you cannot make everyone happy, all of the time. Look for opportunities to balance what you do for others with what you do for yourself. Take time to go for a walk, listen to your favorite music, or read a good book. What activities make you feel happy?
- Sometimes you have to say no. Over-scheduling can lead to feeling overwhelmed, it can increase cortisol levels, and can impair performance. Prioritize some activities that leave you feeling positive, motivated, or uplifted.
- Take time to breathe. Set aside time to sit with yourself, take a few slow deep breaths, and pay attention to what you are feeling. Notice if you are feeling tired, anxious, calm, excited, etc. Take a minute to acknowledge your feelings and adjust your activities as needed.
- Look for opportunities to connect with others. People are social beings by nature. Create the space to spend quality time with friends and family. Social connectedness is linked to both mental and physical health benefits.
