Cross-Country Is Back!!

As our county positivity rates continue to decline we are able to offer more programs in a safe and responsible way for students in person. March 15th will be the first day of practice for our cross-country team. We do have a limited number of spots available and all levels of experience are welcome.

Below is information about sign ups and about cross-country running.

You will be contacted to confirm your place in the program, remember space is limited per County guidelines.

The Basics of Cross-Country at PVIS:

  • TRAINING GROUPS: The team will be divided into cohorts of 14 students for one coach, per state and county guideline. These cohorts will be determined solely by ability regardless of gender. The size of the team will be determined by number of available coaches. The more volunteer coaches, the more cohorts we can have.

  • TRAINING: We will hold practices each Monday and Friday from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. at PVIS. All students are required to attend both sessions. Three unexcused absences will result in the athlete being removed from the team. The students will run between 3 and 6 miles depending on their ability.

  • FOCUS: This is a distance running and training group. Because of the lack of available facilities and a limited coaching staff we will be focusing solely on events from 400 meters to 3,200 meters.

  • COMPETITION: We will hold three cross country meets in March and April. All three will be on the Palos Verdes High School Cross Country Course next to PVPUSD Little League complex in Lunada Bay. We also hope to host three track meets featuring only distance events at either Peninsula or Palos Verdes High School in April and May. There may also be additional competition opportunities for some athletes in the South Bay and outside the area. We will forward parents a schedule as soon as it is available.

  • EQUIPMENT: Every student needs to bring running shoes, running or soccer shorts, and a drink to every practice. It is important to run in running shoes and not soccer flats, Vans, hiking boots, or tennis shoes. Also if your children use an inhaler they need to bring that as well. Every year we have incidents where kids have asthmatic issues because they forgot their inhaler. We also recommend sun screen.

  • HYDRATION/NUTRITION: Each student should bring a water bottle or sports drink to each training session. Runners should eat roughly 3 hours before running. They should also make sure they are hydrating throughout the day each day especially as temperatures get warmer.
