PVIS Families,
I hope you and our students are doing well and hanging in there. In the best of circumstances this time of year can drag on for students, and I recognize the virtual learning program may only be intensifying those feelings. Couple that with the challenges our country is facing, and our students deservedly may feel numb to it all. As adults, I hope that we can find the strength to provide our students with hope and positivity. We know that however difficult these times are, it WILL GET BETTER! Let's move forward with hope and optimism.
This week we are celebrating Yellow Ribbon Week (more details below), please join us in modeling kindness, positivity and focusing in on making connections. As we continue to navigate through the current challenges, our connections are more important than ever! Check in on your friends, and encourage your children to reach out to other students. Acknowledge that we are all doing the very best that we can, please keep that in mind when communicating with people in your lives (friends, colleagues, teachers, and even on social media). My challenge to all of you this week, is to choose positive communication 100% of the time, regardless of the situation.
Being positive does not mean everything is perfect, it's so much more powerful. Being positive means we respect and care for one another, and know that together, better days are in our future.
Positive communication is defined as any kind of communication that elicits positive response and actions from the intended audience. Positive communication has the power to convert even negative feelings into positive ones and helps you create a positive impression for yourself. Positive communication comes from feeling heard and understood. A few strategies that will promote positive communication in our Sea King Community are:
- Pause to reflect before reacting right away. (you could even draft an email with your immediate response, save it and go back to it later to edit or even decide whether or not you still want to send).
- Be mindful of your word choice, and frame messages in a positive way, avoid negativity or harsh words.
- Be Brief. Most people say more than necessary when they haven't planned it in advance, especially when nervous or angry.
- Be Specific.
- Be Positive.
- Label Your Feelings.
- Offer an Understanding Statement.
- Take Partial Responsibility.
- Acknowledge their perspective
- Share your perspective politely
- Avoid contempt and judgment
- Keep an open mind
- Don't make it personal.
- Avoid putting down the other person's ideas and beliefs.
- Use "I" statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need.
- Listen to the other point of view....disagree RESPECTFULLY.
- Stay calm.
- Offer to Help.
