Assignment

Element Superhero Crest

Objective: You will design and draw a crest for an element superhero. The crest will include the superhero’s name, based on the element, an emblem, based on the element’s chemical symbol(s), and the superhero’s special power(s) and weakness(es), based on the properties and common uses of the element. You will sign up for your element of choice.

Crest should be drawn and colored on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper (separate sheet, do not draw on the back of your details sheet) and take up the whole page

Rubric attached below

Before you begin:

What are the special characteristics that make a superhero? Think about your favorite superhero from a movie, comic book, cartoon, or video game. Superheroes have descriptive names, such as The Incredible Hulk–for an astonishingly large guy, or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle–for a young, transformed, karate-chopping reptile. They dress unique to set them apart from the public. Their clothing is usually colorful, form fitting and adorned with a recognizable crest or emblem. Superman wears red tights with a big “S” on his chest and the Joker paints his face like a clown.  Superheroes have super abilities. Spider-Man has his “spider sense” and is able to cling to most surfaces and Batman has extraordinary detective skills.

They have weaknesses too. Super Mario is vulnerable to fire and Wolverine has a terrible temper. Think about what your element would be like if it somehow magically turned into a superhero. What would his/her unique characteristics be?

Warm Ups (ISN pg. 17)

You do not have to copy down the information, just answer the question.
On the way to school, Ellie sat on a bench waiting for her friend. She noticed snow all around her. Later that day, Ellie and her friend walked home and passed the same bench. Ellie's friend said, “There is a puddle in front of the bench. It must have rained while we were in school, creating this puddle.”
Ellie disagreed. She had a different claim about how the puddle formed based on the evidence from her observations. Ellie's evidence was as follows:
  • The park was covered in snow that morning but not in the afternoon.
  • Ellie didn’t need her jacket on the way home because it was so warm.
  • It was sunny all day.
Do you think the puddle was formed from rain? Why or why not?
